Entegris' Over-Molding Patent Upheld in Korea

Aug 04, 2010 at 5:00 PM EDT

BILLERICA, Mass., Aug. 4, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entegris, Inc. announced today that the Intellectual Property Tribunal (IPT) of the Republic of Korea granted Entegris full patent rights to proprietary over-molding technology claims.

Over-molding is the use of successive steps to join different materials, and enables the precise and selective application of high-performance materials used in shippers and process carriers. Entegris is a leading global supplier of shippers and process carriers used to transport semiconductor wafers, data storage components, and other electronics.

"We are pleased that the IPT has upheld our patent and look forward to continuing to utilize this technology in our own manufactured products as well as licensing the technology to third parties," said William Shaner, vice president and general manager of Entegris' Microenvironments Division. "Our claim to this propriety technology is now recognized by jurisdictions around the world."

Over-molding techniques are particularly important to make advanced shippers and process carriers affordable, since it allows for the use of high-performance polymers such as PEEK to be used only where essential on the product, and less expensive materials to be used elsewhere.

The IPT decision overturns an earlier decision by the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Previously, some claims in the Korean Patent No, 543875, entitled "Composite Substrate Carrier" were not originally approved. This latest decision has substantiated all claims within the patent.
